It is well-known that the development of pressure ulcers is associated with longer hospital stays. This might not be related to the pressure ulcer per se, but to the patient’s age and illness (risk status). This fact impacts a period prevalence study. Over a year, the turnover of patients with short lengths of stay (and probably without pressure ulcers) will be proportionally higher than that of patients with longer lengths of stay. In a point prevalence study, length of stay does not affect the results.
