BOOK REVIEW

Science and Practice of Pressure Ulcer Management
Editor: Marco Romanelli
Co-editors: Michael Clark, George Cherry, Denis Colin and Tom Defloor
Publisher: Springer-Verlag (London) Ltd., 2006
ISBN: l 85233 839 3 Price: £UK 60, Euro 92.95

This collection of twenty-two chapters, written by an impressive range of international key opinion leaders on the topic of pressure ulcers, fills a muchneeded void in the existing literature. At long last there is one reliable text that maps out both the pathophysio1ogy of pressure damage and the current scientific background to support the practical management of this condition.

The content is comprehensive and covers all relevant aspects, ranging from quality of life issues, aetiology and practical treatment solutions. Both conservative and surgical approaches are fully explored. The opening chapter sets the scene and, in a no-nonsense fashion, demands more careful interpretation, presentation and collection of data related to prevalence and incidence.

The chapter exploring mechanisms of pressure ulcer development is excellent. It clearly explains the science of pressure damage encompassing intrinsic and extrinsic components. The full complexity of all the contributing factors is described extensively. This is essential reading for those managing both patients with pressure damage and those at risk. The individual style of the various authors gives a personal, honest and practical flavour to the content, while the rigor of the science presented is preserved. In the closing pages the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel takes the opportunity to debate the political and legal implications of this major health problem. The importance of this text cannot be overstated.
The devastating impact of pressure ulcers on patients, carers, and health economies has been ignored for too long. The availability of this reliable and comprehensive textbook offers great potential to improve outcomes.
